Understanding Context in Translation
The word "Bank" in German could mean both a bank (as in a financial institution) and a bench (something you sit on). Translator apps usually give the meaning that's more common or popular, and Readpoly also uses a basic translation functionality which is enough for most of the cases but for situations where a word has multiple meanings that depend on the sentence, having a context-aware word translation is important to really understand a text.
Example
In the basic translation mode, clicking on the word "Bank" in any sentence would translate it to "bank", simply because the word-to-word translation doesn't know about the surrounding context.
But with context-aware translation, it can understand that in this sentence, it actually means "bench" because it includes a reference to a favorite place in the park.
And in another example, we see the same word "Bank" again, but in a different context. There's a reference about money being withdrawn, so it gives us the translation of "bank", instead of a "bench".
The feature uses Google's Gemini AI to understand nuance, idiomatic expressions, and context-specific meanings that traditional translation tools often miss. It is a little bit slower than the basic translation mode, which is why it's possible to switch between the two modes to give you flexibility depending on the text you're reading.
How to use it
By default, basic translation mode is active for all users. But for premium users who would like to switch to context-aware translation mode for their texts, they can do so from the settings.
In the settings, go to the "Word & Explain" tab, select the "Advanced" option and save it.
Context Aware Translations is available for all Readpoly premium users with unlimited usage.
